CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Venice at Night

The deluxe tour consists of rooftop stops at three hotel/casinos. They treat us to tours of the high-roller accommodations, exclusive club access, and all the while they ply us with more food and champagne. At the last casino, we’re given a private lesson on how to play baccarat in a high-roller room.

We have fun thanks to Tony, our entertaining pilot, and Kaylee and Wyatt, the couple who share our tour. They’re trust fund kids from Texas, just married five days ago, and are about to go on a year’s travel wandering the world. They’re a lively couple and the four of us have a blast together. The tour postpones the awkward discussion of Kurt’s kiss. I’ve already begun to rationalize it as a product of his inebriated state and, like Cinderella, fun-loving Kurt will be gone by the end of the night. I watch him out of the corner of my eye while Kaylee is telling me how her husband proposed. Kurt’s throwing up his hands to emphasize a point or impart some great truth to Wyatt, who appears engrossed in the conversation. It’s good he’s enjoying himself. Then it occurs to me that I could use this Vegas trip as leverage to remind him how unKurt he was. You never know, it might be useful one day.

Kurt continues to act like we’re newlyweds. We all take lots of pictures on our camera phones and the staff is nice enough to oblige when we ask them to take pictures of us. Kurt appears to be having fun with the deception. I don’t see any harm, so I play along as well. The extent of being his wife is hand holding, walking with his arm around me, and a few sweet kisses. We even made up a story about our crazy Vegas chapel wedding to entertain Kaylee and Wyatt. I think this pretense might give him a slight respite. He was so down after his phone call, maybe this will help him cope with whatever problems might be troubling him.

At the end of the tour, our driver picks us up at the airport. Our hotel is close, and it won’t take long to return. Tomorrow we’ll attend the R&D dinner at the hotel. Depending on what happens during the dinner, it would be wise not to plan anything until I’m sure about the evening. I’ll invite Okobi and a few other engineers out for after dinner entertainment to make it look like it’s just a few old friends getting together. I’ve already sent texts to some of my contacts in the city in case I need tickets to a show or other attractions they might find interesting.

The driver pulls out into traffic. I suggest to a distracted Kurt that instead of returning to the hotel we should drive the strip and continue on to the Fremont Experience, where the original Las Vegas casinos were built. He’s seen the strip by air, but to appreciate it fully, you must experience it at street level.
